Every day we face challenges that wear us down and make it difficult to get through the day. Many times we end up feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. However, we somehow believe that it’s wrong or selfish to slow down even for a moment. Today we are going to break bad habits and I am going to teach you how! It is as simple as taking a self-care break. In this post, I am going to teach you how to optimize just 10 minutes of your time to create a relaxing and epic self-care break.
I speak about self-care quite often on this blog and am constantly finding new ways to calm myself. Calming down requires constant effort and attention to your wellbeing. You have to be willing to accept when you are down and take the time to get back up. That may not be easy when you are not sure what to do and have time constraints. So, to make things easier for you, I am teaching you how to have an epic self-care break!
To have an Epic Self-Care Break You Need:
The Right Space
The right space can really create calm and rest. Of course, it will be impossible to redesign your office to the perfect Feng Shui settings, but you can clear the clutter. Remember the way you keep your space, is the way that you feel. So if your office is a hot mess, then you feel a hot mess. Clear your space, clean up a bit and you will feel the pressure to get ish done rise off of your shoulders. During self-care time, make sure your desk is clear, or walk away from it completely. Close the door, or find a private space to decompress and refocus.
Set the Mood
At work, I have an office so I am able to change the lighting in my space. I find the overhead light to be unnatural and it hurts my eyes, so I never use it. Instead, I use lamps to light my office and it gives it a relaxed feeling. During break time turn your phone face down, I may even put on some soft music. By doing all of this, you are setting the mood and telling your brain it is time to relax. Plus there are some great apps that have rainforest or animals sounds to get the party started.
Get Your Mind Right
Many people don’t believe me when I talk to them about self-care. They say, “oh I don’t have the time,” or “oh it doesn’t work for me.” If you tell your brain it doesn’t work, then no, it will not work. This is mind over matter here people. You have to tell yourself, you are going to do something, and it will work. Stop expecting big results the first time around. People are always looking for the magic in all of the wrong places. Often the accomplishment is not that the deep breathing “worked”, but in the fact that you took the time to work on you.
Pick an Activity
Don’t just sit there and do nothing, that is not self-care! You have to condition your mind to relax, so take self-care seriously by pre-picking some activities you will engage in. They don’t have to be big activities either. While a spa day is fun and all, that’s not something most people can do often or at all. During your self-care break, you need at least 5 minutes. Yup, you read that right, 5 minutes, to reset, recharge, and rebalance your life. You can, of course, take longer if you have the time. But, you can get a lot done in five minutes.
Here are some activities you can use doing your epic self-care break:
- Deep Breathing
- It takes just 5 minutes to use deep breathing. Visualize breathing in positivity and breathing out negativity. Quiet your mind by focusing on a keyword like relax, calm, cool, or still. Take longer exhales than inhales.
- Guided Meditations
- Visualize a place that is always calming to you. Imagine going there in your mind. Use the five senses to stimulate the feeling of being away. (download the free guided meditation scripts to assist with this!)
- There are so many adult coloring pages that you can download and print or just draw some circles and color!
- Write/Recite an Affirmation or three (Mantras work too)
- Take a Nap (at least 20mins)
- A good nap can put you right back on track, and you only need about twenty minutes.
Be In the Moment
This isn’t the time for a selfie! Sure take a picture when you are done to show off your artwork, or to share your rested face but that’s it. Your self-care is all about you, don’t disrupt it by detailing your process. Be present in that moment, get in tune with your body and allow yourself to heal from the aches and pains created during the day.
Now it’s your turn to take your epic self-care break! Remember it’s about the process and how you do it. The magic is in the fact that you completed self-care. So, break out your phone and start planning your breaks for the week! When will you have your next self-care break? Show some love with a like, comment, and/or share and let me know what you are planning for your next epic self-care break!
Until next time…
