We all know why self-care is so important to our everyday life. And while I enjoy the beautiful Instagram posts of freshly painted nails and done up hair on #selfcareSaturday, I don’t think that’s true self-care. Yes, spa days are in most boss babes hopes and wishes. But, if you are waking up on Sunday, feeling refreshed and by Sunday night you’re riddled with anxiety about Monday, your self-care efforts aren’t working. In this post, I’m going to share exactly why your self-care efforts aren’t working.
I love to rave about self-care. In fact, it is one of the first things I talk about with both counseling and coaching clients. It is the best way to start feeling good right now. It’s trendy topic and one that could easily be misunderstood. There have been many times where I colored and colored but once finished I continued to stress about my everyday life. I cannot count how many times, I got a quick workout only to be bummed to return to the same mundane routines after. While getting a manicure and pedicure always elicited joy, that excitement didn’t always last and I was right back to where I started. Have you been here before?
Why Your Self Care Efforts Aren’t Working
The biggest mistake people make when it comes to self-care lies in their thoughts. You think “oh, I can just do this one activity and my whole day is fixed.” But in reality that one stress relief activity that lasts for five minutes won’t hold up to an 8 hour day of stressors. And it isn’t a healthy expectation based on the reality. Your self-care efforts aren’t working because there is no balance in the routine.
How do Balance and Self-Care Go together?
Self-care isn’t just the pretty luxuries in life, it’s a balance of your life essentials too. If you’re not balancing those essentials, you are guaranteed to feel exhausted on a regular basis. To just engage in the pretty stuff is basically putting a band-aid on a gushing wound, and wondering why you’re still feeling woozy. It just doesn’t work for you. Balancing your life essentials help you to tackle you stressors head on. The pretty stuff reinforces your efforts to balance.
What Are You Balancing?
I’ve come up with five areas you should include in your efforts to balance your life.
- Finances and Budget
- Shelter and Safety
- Health and Wellness
When you look at your life as a whole how are you doing in these areas? I can guarantee that your daily stressors are linked to at least one of these areas. If it is, you are constantly pulling energy and not relieving the situation. When you balance these areas, you have less worry in your daily life and restoring your energy as you need too.
Balancing your life isn’t easy but it is certainly one of the best ways to nourish your soul and reset your life. If you are having trouble with your self-care, it’s time you create balance in your life. Need some help building balance? Sign up for a discovery call with me to see how I could be a support to you.
