Many times, I sit and try to figure out what’s wrong with the world. Perhaps it’s a lack of empathy, maybe there is not enough to go around, or maybe there is no one answer. While many things play part in human social lives, one thing is clear to me. Insight is hella important when it comes to building self-awareness. Some people have insight and other’s don’t but Tasha Eurich is teaching everyone how to build it!
In my latest podcast, I talk about building insight by starting with your core values. It is easy enough to decide what those are, but sometimes we get stuck. In the book Insight: Why we are not as self-aware as we think and how seeing ourselves clearly helps us succeed in work and life, Tasha shows us the confusion between awareness and arrogance. Too often we get caught up in the “bad chick” persona trying to be enlightened women. This book is the best book I have read this year! I share more in my podcast about the clarity it brings to mind.
In the book, she explains how in an arrogant state of mind we make poor choices. We do things against our values because we have a false confidence. But, when we act with our passions and values in mind we make healthier choices. This book is eye opening and a great way to start getting to know yourself. In a time when the world puts great emphasis on self-confidence, Eurich challenges this idea. So what is insight? It is the capacity to gain a deeper understanding of oneself. As you build self-awareness you gain clarity and control of your life.
Overall I find this book to be awesome! It is a change in the tradition discuss of confidence, self-awareness, and insight. In my latest podcast, I draw inspiration from the book to discuss how you can build this in your life today. Be sure to take a listen, and check out the other podcast on the adulting with Shauna page. How do you feel about your own self-awareness? Share in the comments below.
